(Quito).- The government of Ecuador today ratified 10 of the first 11 questions sent to the Constitutional Court to submit to popular consultation, only giving up the one related to a possible return of casinos and gaming halls.
In this way, the Executive responded to the request of Judge Teresa Nuques, who the day before gave President Daniel Noboa 24 hours to express whether he maintained interest in submitting the first block of questions, sent to the Court on January 2, to a popular vote.
Regarding the question related to the authorization of games of chance and casinos, in the document sent to the judicial body, Noboa indicates that he will not insist on the matter "because he considers that the citizen debate related to this issue is not appropriate at this time."
The president confirmed the relevance of including the rest of the questions in a consultation, despite the criticism received, since many of his proposals can be addressed or are already debated in the National Assembly (Parliament).
The questions raised in the first block are related to the role of the Army in confronting organized crime, they propose that the military join the tasks of controlling weapons and ammunition and that certain crimes, such as terrorism, murder, organized crime, among others, be punished with the maximum penalty.
Subsequently, other questions were added to these that cover topics such as the extradition of criminals, the immediate revocation of illegal mining concessions, allowing the Executive to present urgent projects on matters of national interest to the Legislature, and pardons for police and military personnel.
The Constitutional Court must issue a ruling on the legality of the questions and, if accepted, the National Electoral Council could call Ecuadorians to the polls, a process that would cost around 60 million dollars.
